How to Fight Imposter Syndrome

January 29, 2025

Imposter syndrome— it’s that nagging voice that whispers,

“You don’t belong here,”

or worse,

“You’re a fraud, and it’s only a matter of time before everyone finds out.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

It’s a universal struggle, especially when stepping out of your comfort zone.

In this post, we’ll break down imposter syndrome, why it happens, and how to free yourself from it.

My First Dance With Imposter Syndrome

Let me take you back to my first freelance writing job.

I was hired to cover a local basketball player’s tournament game.

Simple, right?

A middle schooler could’ve done it.

Yet, I panicked.

The thought of getting paid to write felt overwhelming—I didn’t think I deserved it.

When I finished the article, I was so nervous I nearly didn’t turn it in. Eventually, I submitted it, and to my surprise, the client loved it.

(Granted, he was paying me next to nothing, but still.)

That moment taught me something I didn’t fully understand at the time: imposter syndrome tricks you into feeling unworthy, even when the evidence shows you’re more than capable.

If you’ve ever felt this way, trust me—you’re in good company. Everyone from fresh graduates to seasoned professionals experiences it.

What is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is the internal belief that your successes are due to luck, not skill and that you’ll be “exposed” as a fraud at any moment.

It’s that nagging feeling that says,

“They’ll figure out I don’t belong.”

It often creeps in when you’re trying something new—starting a job, switching careers, or even scrolling through Instagram and comparing yourself to influencers living their best (and most edited) lives.

How Imposter Syndrome Sneaks Into Your Life

Here’s how it got me: I’ve been writing since 2016, but I only started calling myself a writer three months ago.

Why?

Because I thought, “If I’m not getting paid for every single piece I write, am I even a writer?”

Spoiler: I’ve always been a writer—because I write.

Imposter syndrome can warp how you see yourself and undermine your achievements.

Social media doesn’t help.

We’re bombarded with highlight reels—glamorous vacations, designer bags, and career milestones. It’s easy to feel like you’re falling behind.

But remember, people only show their best moments online, not the messy middle. Your journey is yours—don’t let comparison steal your joy.

Signs You’re Dealing With Imposter Syndrome

Not sure if imposter syndrome is at play?

Here are some telltale signs:

– You over-prepare for everything, even casual Zoom calls.

– You downplay compliments or brush them off entirely

– You constantly feel one mistake away from being “exposed.”

– You compare your behind-the-scenes struggles to someone else’s highlight reel.

How to Fight Imposter Syndrome

If you’re ready to take back control, here are some strategies that work for me:

1. Recognize It

The first step is awareness. When you feel imposter syndrome creeping in, call it out: “Oh, there’s that fraud feeling again—cute, but not today.” Naming it takes away some of its power.

2. Talk About It

Share how you’re feeling with a trusted friend or mentor. This was hard for me at first—I hated admitting my insecurities. But when I finally opened up, I realized everyone feels this way sometimes. Hearing supportive feedback can help silence that critical inner voice.

3. Reframe Your Thinking

Celebrate your wins, no matter how small. Got your first comment on a blog post? That’s a win. Did someone compliment your work? That’s a win too. Treat every achievement as valid, because it is.

4. Accept Compliments—Without Downsizing Them

Practice saying, “Thank you,” without adding, “But it’s not a big deal.” You deserve the recognition, so take it.

5. Keep Showing Up

Imposter syndrome thrives on fear, but action is its kryptonite. Keep putting yourself out there, even when you feel unqualified. You’ll prove to yourself that you’re more than capable.

The Power of Perspective

When all else fails, perspective is your best friend.

Everyone is winging it to some degree—even the people you look up to.

Your boss?

Probably figuring things out as they go.

That influencer with the picture-perfect life?

They have bad days too.

Here’s another comforting thought: feeling imposter syndrome means you care about what you’re doing. It’s a sign you’re pushing yourself and growing. And that’s a good thing.

You’re Not a Fraud

If you want to try new things and grow, you’ll need to learn how to silence that inner critic and own your successes.

When your brain starts whispering, “You’re not good enough,” remember—it’s lying.

So the next time imposter syndrome knocks, slam the door. You’ve got too much brilliance to share and too many goals to reach. Show up, own your wins, and keep working towards becoming your best self.
